Three

Auchen

toshan for this summer season

As they preserve reminding us on their labels, ‘each single drop triple distilled’. Let’s attempt to kick this off with a pure expression that was bottled by DL a couple of years in the past and that, for forgotten causes, we have not tried but……

Corse
(Saleccia seashore, Corsica)

Auchentoshan 16 yo 2000/2017 (48.4%, Douglas Laing, Old Particular, refill hogshead, cask #DL11591, 319 bottles)

Auchentoshan 16 yo 2000/2017 (48.4%, Douglas Laing, Outdated Explicit, refill hogshead, cask #DL11591, 319 bottles) Four stars

Certainly, a refill hoggie ought to have left the distillate shine although… Color: white wine. Nostril: certainly, bonbons, sweets, candies far and wide, nonetheless you name them. Particularly cranberry drops, poppy bonbons (superb!) and all issues oranges. Precisely what we had been anticipating and anticipating. Some welcome touches of ‘fruity’ varnish too, which do belong to this sort of make, in my little expertise. Mouth: liquid bonbons, completely, particularly orange drops, additionally liqueurs, Cointreau, Grand-Marnier and all that. Some mandarin and citron liqueurs too. Just a few ice cubes and presto, we’re in Corsica with out having despatched any burnt kerosene into the environment. End: medium, on the identical very fruity notes, plus touches of grass and that typical wee varnish. Feedback: as all the time, no extreme complexity however I am discovering it neat and tidy. I additionally imagine it will, certainly, take ice effectively.

SGP:641 – 85 factors.

Talking of Corsica this label appears to be like like the image was taken with a drone flying over the Saleccia seashore, west of Bastia and east of l’Île Rousse. Great…

Auchentoshan 23 yo 1997/2021 (46.1%, The Whisky Blues, barrel, cask #101748, 191 bottles)

Auchentoshan 23 yo 1997/2021 (46.1%, The Whisky Blues, barrel, cask #101748, 191 bottles) Four stars and a half

Beautiful label certainly, let’s dive into this wee Auchentoshan… Color: straw – white wine. Nostril: as anticipated, identical because the DL, just a bit rounder, and maybe a tad extra tropical, with some maracuja sherbet and mango ice cream, each killers. I imagine it is simply all fairly good, presumably one of many loveliest ‘new’ Auchentoshans I might attempt since, say 2010. Too dangerous the house owners are a bit busy getting ready concoctions with very energetic woods and wines. Mouth: impeccable, straightforward (too straightforward? Nah…), rounded and magnificently fruity. Syrups and liqueurs, quince liqueur, oranges, tangerines, wealthy thick mangos, even bananas… I imagine some mad mixologists might attempt to make some cocktails which can be often completed with rum utilizing this Auchentoshan as an alternative, even when that will sound like against the law of lese-majesty to some moist blankets (ahem…) End: medium. A complete fruit salad seasoned with acacia honey. Feedback: what a splendidly fruity and clear Auchentoshan! I might add that by no means did whisky and label match this effectively.

SGP:741 – 89 factors.

And so we had talked about heavy woods and wines…

Auchentoshan 29 yo 1988/2018 'PX Sherry Cask Finish' (49.7%, OB)

Auchentoshan 29 yo 1988/2018 ‘PX Sherry Cask End’ (49.7%, OB) Three stars and a half

I will confess, I have been procrastinating with this one, I hope I used to be improper… Color: gold with touches of enamoured partridge eye. No, actually. Nostril: not so quick, that is attention-grabbing, displaying slightly outdated instruments, copper, outdated books, fresh-polished outdated furnishings, actually some hoisin, Marmite, walnut wine, patchouli, even a bit incense and outdated cigars… That is clearly extra complicated than your common Auchentoshan al pure, however is that basically what we’re anticipating from an Auchentoshan? The jury’s nonetheless out… Mouth: no, sadly some heavy oak has taken over, outdated walnuts, bitter chocolate, floor mocha beans, a bit mud, black raisins… The excellent news is that some sweeter raisiny notes do handle to drift too, in addition to some tamarind jam. Some type of steadiness is discovered ultimately, phew. End: slightly lengthy however the PX has saved the higher hand. Feedback: slightly a strongly-fortified PX from Malaga at instances, however the nostril was fairly lovely. What’s good with these nose-malts is you can take them out, give a couple of sniffs, and pour them again into their bottles. Saves you some huge cash.
