The vicarious Feis Ile periods
At present Jura

Celebrating Islay and Feis Ile from Whisky Enjoyable Towers, with rigorously chosen whiskies from most distilleries, whereas we’re all dreaming of 2022…

As I remembered it, Jura used to share their Open Day with Bunnahabhain. Or was it Caol Ila? However it appears that evidently they’ve now acquired their very own day, on the Sunday after Ardbeg. We have had some nice enjoyable touring Jura Distillery previously, I keep in mind as an example a protracted dialogue with Richard Paterson, Willie Tait and supervisor Mickey Heads about ‘the place does the methanol actually go’ in distillation. Oh and concerning the idea of equilibrium.

Jura

However that was a very long time in the past, solely the palm timber will precisely recall these humorous occasions. However these palm timber by no means speak, which is best, all of us agree. Now we’ll solely have one or two of them; oh and are not we completely happy that no bottler’s ever completed a ‘Secret Jura’? But?

Isle of Jura 21 yo (44%, OB, +/-2016)

Isle of Jura 21 yo (44%, OB, +/-2016) Five stars
There had been a bicentenary 21 again in 2010, which we had discovered fairly glorious again within the days (WF 88) however I’ve by no means tried this extra common model at 44%. I imagine it has been discontinued, not too positive about that… Color: amber. Nostril: typical Jura, with some metallic polish, mustard, autumn leaves, mutton suet and even cheese. I am considering gorgonzola, no? Then truffles and dried fruits, particularly dried figs. Additionally notes of mead and, exactly, fig wine. Jura, when not buried underneath numerous oak and/or wine, actually is a malt not like every other. Mouth: we have by no means been this near walnut wine, and God is aware of we’re mentioning walnut wine on a regular basis in our humble tasting notes. I’ve to say I really like this. We’re additionally very near some nice amontillado, or maybe palo cortado, no matter. Nice drop, nice sherry. Energy, mouthfeel and physique are simply completely excellent. End: fairly lengthy and fairly sublimely mustardy. In fact, walnuts preserve working the present within the aftertaste. Feedback: perhaps I am amazed (S.!) however actually, it’s a nice shock. Cheers Richard Paterson, cheers Mickey Heads, and cheers Willie Tait (he who used to inform, ‘I could also be a Willie, however Richard Paterson is a Dick’ – ah, the great previous rustically unbridled days earlier than the appearance of name escorts…)

It’s an indie that we must always have as #2. I’ve at all times discovered these a little bit troublesome to pin down, however I do know that is me…

Jura 30 yo 1990/2020 (46.3%, Thompson Bros., refill hogshead, cask #5310, 186 bottles)

With the Paps of Jura on the label. Do you do not forget that there are three of them, however that you simply simply can not see greater than two from any viewpoint? Color: gold. Nostril: a little bit un-Jura, maybe, that’s to say a lot fruitier, brisker, extra fragrant than the officers. Perhaps is that as a result of the officers normally make considerable use of sherry and different wine casks? Good notes of overripe backyard fruits, particularly a number of sorts of pears, plums and apples, plus fruity hops and softer citrus. Tangerines are shut. Significantly, it is a lovely, extraordinarily well-balanced nostril. Mouth: good, this time, I perceive. I prefer it that the mustardy, nearly mezcaly core would stay apparent, whereas the fruits would then come out one after the opposite, some ‘western’ and a few ‘tropical’. Greengages, guavas, pears, papayas, grapefruits… And plenty of others. End: lengthy and maybe extra on greens. Brussels sprouts stewed in IPA? No marvel nobody ever needs me to cook dinner something at house. Feedback: it is a tie. They have been utterly completely different however the constructions have been related. Correct distillery character, how very cool!

Over to Angus in Edinburgh…

Jura 30 yo 1991/2021 (46.5%, Thompson Brothers, refill hogshead, 216 bottles)
Congrats to the Thompson Brothers on reaching the under no circumstances shabby milestone of 100 bottlings. Color: straw. Nostril: dusty cereals and mushy waxes at first. A beautiful and fairly scented nostril with pollens, chalk, oatcakes and these wee milk bottle sweets. Certainly, this sort of lactic / waxy profile appears to be a trademark of many of those early Nineties classic Juras that are at the moment showing. In time some sandalwood and seaside pebbles emerge. Mouth: beautiful arrival all on stone fruits, putty, wooden spices, waxes and this impression of sticky, glazed fruits. Issues like pears baked in calvados and a touch of sultana. But globally it nonetheless stays fairly recent, inexperienced and with this beautiful older type stability between west coast highland and coastal kinds. End: medium, calmly natural in a inexperienced and fairly recent approach, inexperienced banana, kumquat and a little bit menthol tobacco. Feedback: Is it simply me, or are these batches of early Nineties Jura all fairly very good?
