BL
Caol Ila celebrity. There’s loads, let’s have just a few at random, for extra enjoyable (s***w verticales and another sorts of pointless logics).

I might additionally prefer to take this chance to toast the beginning of Angus’s first wee lass, who was simply born, proper on Burn’s Night time ! Congratulations to the glad dad and mom, that is going to be one fortunate child.

Caol Ila 10 yo 2011/2021 (52.7%, Thompson Bros. for Kirsch Import, Germany, 328 bottles)

Caol Ila 10 yo 2011/2021 (52.7%, Thompson Bros. for Kirsch Import, Germany, 328 bottles) Four stars

Do you know that the Thompson Brothers do communicate German and that they may recite Goethe or Schiller (or Caol Ila) with out blinking an eye fixed? Subsequent time you are up there in Dornoch, simply ask them. Color: gold. Nostril: pristine, ultra-ashy, bordering rubberness. A wee acetic facet, pretty. With water: shoe polishes of all colors. Fairly woke. Mouth (neat): fattish, wealthy, oily, tropical. Guava and avocado syrup coating lemony marzipan and a really rubbery ashiness. Burnt tyres and cigar ashes. Maybe slightly thick, no? With water: no. Many polishes, which I at all times get pleasure from. Additionally the greenest lemons and, certainly, oysters (examine the label). And a drop of Tabasco, naturally. End: lengthy, rooty, slightly gritty. Feedback: it is younger however it’s received the attributes of an older one. Like, 15 as an alternative of 10. Moderately a fats one.

SGP:466 – 87 factors.

Caol Ila 11 yo 2010/2021 (58.2%, Signatory Vintage for The Whisky Exchange, refill sherry butt, cask # 316662, 558 bottles)

Caol Ila 11 yo 2010/2021 (58.2%, Signatory Classic for The Whisky Alternate, refill sherry butt, cask # 316662, 558 bottles) Four stars

Every little thing ought to go properly right here, though, sherry and peat… Color: amber. Nostril: bitter oloroso and coal tar, cigars, inexperienced walnuts, carbolineum, varnish, cider vinegar and, properly, onion soup. Feels a bit like Skinny Lizzy at 5am. Yep, I do know this isn’t Irish. With water: previous weapons and new umami sauce. Fairly glutamate-y. Mouth (neat): sherry and peat that work. Roasted chestnuts, caramelised pecans, black nougat, a tiny olive and a few pipe tobacco. With water: caramel and demerara sugar far and wide, even the smoke’s been saved underneath wraps right here. End: very lengthy, soupy. Extra smoky onion soup and hoisin. Tar and smoke within the aftertaste. Feedback: you by no means know, after thirty years in glass, these may attain 93+. Whisky’s about long run anyway, is it not.

SGP:556 – 87 factors.

Caol Ila 9 yo 2012/2021 (54.6%, Cadenhead, Authentic Collection, bourbon hogshead, 300 bottles)

Caol Ila 9 yo 2012/2021 (54.6%, Cadenhead, Genuine Assortment, bourbon hogshead, 300 bottles) Three stars and a half

My God, 20212, that is final night time! Color: mild gold. Nostril: very typical younger Cola Ila. Mercurochrome, oysters, granny Smith, seawater, slightly vanilla fudge, aaaaand repeat. Mercurochrome, oysters, granny Smith… With water: flour, oats, porridge, hessian, and again to mercurochrome, bandages, oysters and new sweater. Mouth (neat): ultra-clean, well-streamed, flawless Caol Ila. Limoncello, oysters, Worcester sauce, fudge from the oak. With water: maybe slightly fats, however actually good. End: lengthy, salty. Notes of smoked salmon. Feedback: absolutely excellent however I want them even cleaner and somewhat ex-dead wooden. Nonetheless up there with the higher ones.

SGP:545 – 84 factors.

Caol Ila 11 yo (58.9%, Scotch Malt Whisky Society, #53.361, 'Ham in a peat kiln', 302 bottles, 2021)

Caol Ila 11 yo (58.9%, Scotch Malt Whisky Society, #53.361, ‘Ham in a peat kiln’, 302 bottles, 2021) Two stars and a half

A Queen Avenue Unique. That is Edinburgh, the place the meals is fabulous and the workers somewhat entrancing (consider me). Color: white wine. Nostril: I am slightly sorry, however hiya? Butter, kelp, whelks and recent almonds. That is all good, however slightly easy. With water: bitter almonds and a terpenic facet. Not completely flabbergasting. Mouth (neat): good salty seafood. Very salty, truly, which is slightly intriguing. Some bitterish herbs. Not too positive. With water: slightly bitter, slightly burnt, slightly disagreeable. End: lengthy and slightly burnt. Acidic aftertaste. Feedback: very robust younger boy from close to Port Askaig. Feels a bit like a random, pointless  cask, if I could.

SGP:356 – 79 factors.

One other downward spiral, it appears… We have to act!

Caol Ila 13 yo 1996/2009 (46%, Chieftain's, Médoc finish, cask #90301/307, 2490 bottles)

Caol Ila 13 yo 1996/2009 (46%, Chieftain’s, Médoc end, cask #90301/307, 2490 bottles) Two stars

We agree, a Médoc end does not make the slightest sense, until it will have been one of many very uncommon white Médocs similar to white Margaux, white Chasse-Spleen (excellent by the way in which) or Mouton’s Ailes d’Argent. Or else… However sadly, it was in all probability a pink… Color: gold with salmony hues. Nostril: good, okay, I agree, this isn’t disagreeable, with some recent hazelnuts, sunflower, tapioca and simply grist. No awful pink berries this far, that is sorted (do not get me unsuitable, love them… in my pink wine). Mouth: dissonant, actually. Metallic, oddly natural, with notes of geranium and cherry stems. End: medium, on no-notes. Extra geranium leaves, inexperienced figs, issues like that. Feedback: a concoction of the previous, I consider nobody’s making them like this anymore. This is the reason we have got immense religion in progress.

SGP:364 – 72 factors.

Caol Ila 10 yo 2010/2021 (58.1%, Whisky Facile, 'Nobody Ever Sailed Past Me', refill sherry butt, cask #216624)

Caol Ila 10 yo 2010/2021 (58.1%, Whisky Facile, ‘No one Ever Sailed Previous Me’, refill sherry butt, cask #216624) Four stars

Seems like a press release by Sir Francis Chichester. Color: amber with pink hues. Nostril: truffles, gasoline, previous weapons, exhaust, recreation (poultry, grouse), Maggi, raspberry vinegar. With water: extra Maggi, miso, previous Pauillac, cabernet, rubber. Frankly, it is slightly robust and Falstaffian. Completely adore this definition discovered on the Net: “having the qualities of Falstaff, particularly his strong, bawdy humour, good-natured rascality, and brazen braggadocio”. Hurray, love that!!! Mouth (neat): slightly monstrous. Raspberry wine, soot, rubber and bell pepper. With water: somewhat round Nebbiolo, in truth. Cassis leaves and buds. End: lengthy extra on cherries and almonds. Feedback: as Biden or Trump would say, to be sincere, this isn’t my most well-liked fashion of Caol Ila. Now inside this fashion, it’s in all probability one among my favourites. All proper, I do know you bought the drift. What’s somewhat low right here is the drinkability index.

SGP:375 – 85 factors.

Extra CI very quickly.
(Merci Lucero)
