The vicarious Feis Ile periods
At this time Lagavulin

Celebrating Islay and Feis Ile from Whisky Enjoyable Towers, with fastidiously chosen whiskies from most distilleries, whereas we’re all dreaming of 2022…

Lagavulin’s Day! Oh, how I am lacking the Lagavulin oysters (one tiny oyster drowned in 10cl of Lagavulin 16), the women’ crab sandwiches, the bay scallops, the pattern of ‘Malt Mill’ if it is nonetheless within the workplace… Oh and the warehouse tour with you-know-whom… And – simply the as soon as won’t harm – let’ begin this with a latest DE…

L

Lagavulin 2003/2019 'Distillers Edition' (43%, OB, lgv 4/508)

Lagavulin 2003/2019 ‘Distillers Version’ (43%, OB, lgv 4/508) Three stars
We have been very lazy with the DEs currently, not for unhealthy causes shall I add. We’ll at all times bear in mind the 1979, bam! Color: gold. Nostril: that is the factor with Lagavulin DE, contrarily to most different Distillers Editions, it’s not that totally different from the common 16, it will simply really feel like a 16 that is been additional pushed in direction of sherriness. This one’s actually very good, with tobacco, caraway, a contact of mustard, cigarettes, cedarwood, pinewood hearth, eucalyptus… All that’s well-balanced, getting even slightly meaty. Ham and porcini. Mouth: slightly drying maybe, and really mentholy. Somewhat a variety of oak this time, skinny mints, then rose jelly and muscat. Tends to grow to be sweeter and sweeter, virtually aquavity (Linie), and even slightly stuffy and cloying. Possibly am I overstating this case however I don’t recognise the older vintages anymore. It is PX, proper. End: quite lengthy and getting very leafy and even bitter. Going from candy to dry and bitter backwards and forwards is slightly tiring. Feedback: superior nostril however the bittersweet palate’s slightly tough to me.

Lg 11 2007/2021 (54.1%, Elixir Distillers 'Elements Of Islay', 1067 bottles)

Lg 11 2007/2021 (54.1%, Elixir Distillers ‘Parts Of Islay’, 1067 bottles) Three stars and a half
Color: white wine. Nostril: lamb’s wool, grist, husk, barley, mercurochrome, bandages, hay. Boy is that this near nature! With water: similar plus plaster and chalk. New sweater, leaven bread. Just a little elementary (ha, ha!) Mouth (neat): very candy and creamy arrival, which may be very Lagavulin. Somebody’s redistilled a very good IPA, resembling Lagunitas (nicely, I really like Lagunitas however I am no professional). Pear and banana cake, plus huge smoke. This one’s not notably coastal, having stated that. With water: extra on bread and flour, with a yeasty facet. End: medium, candy, virtually sugary. Peated pears. Feedback: nicely, that is as near visiting the distillery as doable, not certain they develop pears on the Lag a’ Mhuilinn. Elementary and good.
SGP:646 – 84 factors.

You will see that Angus has tried this Lg too and preferred it much more. Now let’s have a look at if we have got one thing else… Maybe a secret one?

An Islay Distillery 9 yo 2007/2017 (59.5%, Cadenhead, Warehouse Tasting, hogshead)

An Islay Distillery 9 yo 2007/2017 (59.5%, Cadenhead, Warehouse Tasting, hogshead) Four stars
Stuff that reminds us of the festivals certainly… That is Lagavulin. Color: white wine. Nostril: uncooked, ethanoly, on almonds and wooden alcohol. We have identified some vodkas… With water: some wool coming by, porridge, novice scones, weissbeer… Mouth (neat): as soon as once more, the inherent sweetness of younger Lagavulin comes out first, it’s actually the sweetest distillate on the island. Pears, orange drops, limoncello – smoked. The tarter, tighter lemon juice and a salty tang. Going in direction of margarita, my favorite cocktail (however I am no cocktail man both). With water: will get very candy once more. Bonbons and candy flour, with a contact of camphor, which might add to the entire thing. Artisan pastis, that is good too. You simply needed to wait… End: lengthy, with quite a variety of dill, fennel seeds, pastis, celeriac… Properly that comes surprising, higher late than by no means. Liquorice within the aftertaste. Feedback: a humorous younger beast that took its time.
SGP:646 – 85 factors.

No big Lagavulins as we speak, I am afraid. Subsequent time, I promise, by the best way the brand new Feis bottling ought to arrive very quickly, we’ll merely add it right here. And I promise we’ll make our subsequent session, which is Bruichladdich, quite extravagant. Promise.

Maintain on, there was one thing slightly flawed with the DE… Let’s shortly strive the newest expression, why wait?…

Lagavulin 2005/2020 'Distillers Edition' (43%, OB, lgv 4/509)

Lagavulin 2005/2020 ‘Distillers Version’ (43%, OB, lgv 4/509) Three stars and a half
Wait, 2020-2005, that is not 16 years! However who’s counting? Color: deep gold. Nostril: good, more energizing, extra coastal, in all probability peatier, drier but, with ashes, seaweed, slightly mint, maybe myrtle… No huge sherry right here, no extreme leafiness, no chocolate and low on the free, no meat and mustard… So it’s a cleaner DE, I’d say. To date. Mouth: nicely, there’s some leather-based, ginger, leaves and raisins, however that goes fairly nicely with the spirits sweetness. Good salt and oranges, tar. I’d say we’re slightly nearer to the ‘common’ 16 years previous, which can’t be unhealthy information. End: good size, smoke, leather-based, cracked pepper, earth and mint, contact of molasses. Feedback: it’s not as sweetish because the ‘2019’ and positively much less bittersweet. Somewhat extra to my liking. Could not they change to oloroso? No, I do know, do not shoot, I used to be simply jesting a wee bit.

Over to Angus in Edinburgh…

Lg 11 2007/2021 (54.1%, Elixir Distillers ‘Parts Of Islay’, 1067 bottles)
Color: white wine. Nostril: very coastal and pure. Numerous moist rocks, seawater, fishing nets, moist seaweed and sand. I additionally fantastic lemon juice, brine and smoked olive oil with a barely leathery peat smoke. Elegant stuff! With water: a lot ashier, sootier and extra to do with materials, bonfire smoke, sea salt and brine. Less complicated with water. Mouth: scorching peppery peat smoke, ashes, brine, lemon juice, oysters and seawater. Very fashionable, pristine peated malt. Some oily tufts of sheep wool in there too together with some solutions of coal mud. With water: smoked barley, hay loft, mercurochrome, extra soot, moist rope and a much bigger impression of tar and capers in brine. End: fairly lengthy, sharply citric on contemporary lemon juice, a contact of parsley and extra gutsy peat smoke. Feedback: all completely fantastic, exact and glorious. Though, feels a notch easy general for me.

Lagavulin 11 yo (61.5%, OB for The Syndicate?, 1980s)

Lagavulin 11 yo (61.5%, OB for The Syndicate?, Nineteen Eighties)
A quite scarce and mysterious bottling of Lagavulin carried out within the Nineteen Eighties, most likely for this group of personal cask house owners often known as ‘The Syndicate’. Color: white wine. Nostril: wow, one other stage! Vastly petrolic and filled with mineral oils, sandalwood, pure tar, anchovy paste, oyster sauce, lemon infused olive oil and touches of kelp and fir wooden. Beautifully fragrant and ‘thick’. With water: pin sharp coastal air, seawater, seaside foam and wee touches of horseradish, aniseed and bathtub salts. Mouth: wooft! This beautiful mixture of petrols, oils, peat smoke, tar, TCP, iodine, embrocations, seaside wooden and preserved lemons in brine. Crystalline peat smoke with hints of shellfish, smoked olive oil and extra impressions of pine wooden once more. A way of impeccable cohesion and focus. With water: completely good with water. Opens spectacularly on medicines, dried herbs, salt-cured fish, tar, deep drying phenolics and a smooth however big peat smoke. End: lengthy, beautiful peaty, smoky, lemony, tarry and filled with olive oil, seawater and extra petrol. Feedback: completely beautiful younger Lagavulin. Impeccable distillate that balances purity, precision, energy, and crucially additionally depth. I like it!
